Volume air yang merembes keluar dari dasar tangki diukur, kemudian selisih antara air yang dituangkan dan air yang keluar dihitung sebagai evapotranspirasi potensial dalam jangka waktu pengukuran tertentu. Lysimeter sederhana berbentuk kubus dengan ukuran sisi satu meter dan memiliki dinding sisi yang dibuat dari bahan impermeabel. Pada bagian dasar lysimeter, dipasang alat untuk mengukur volume air yang merembes keluar. Tanah di bagian atas lysimeter ditanami tanaman, dan evapotranspirasi dihitung berdasarkan selisih antara curah hujan, air yang disiramkan, dan air yang merembes keluar dari dasar lysimeter. Namun, karena kadar kelembaban tanah tidak selalu diketahui dengan pasti, pengukuran evapotranspirasi aktual menggunakan lysimeter sederhana hanya dapat memberikan estimasi dalam jangka waktu yang panjang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Untuk mengetahui evapotranspirasi harian dan variasinya dari waktu ke waktu, digunakan lysimeter yang dapat mengukur perubahan beratnya. Lysimeter ini lebih akurat karena mampu mendeteksi perubahan kandungan air dalam tanah secara langsung. Agar hasil pengukuran lebih representatif terhadap kondisi alami, tanah yang digunakan dalam lysimeter harus merupakan tanah yang tidak terganggu (<em>undisturbed soil<\/em>).
