Pencemaran air dapat terjadi baik secara alami maupun karena limbah oleh aktivitas manusia. Ketika dimanfaatkan, airtanah yang tercemar menjadi berbahaya bagi kesehatan manusia.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fetter (2008) menjelaskan jika sumber pencemar (pollutant) bermacam- macam, di antaranya adalah penyimpanan limbah rumah tangga (septic tank), tempat pembuangan sampah akhir (landfill), kebocoran dari SPBU, aktivitas penambangan, penggunaan pupuk dan pestisoda pada aktivitas pertanian, limbah peternakan, kebocoran pada industri bahan kimia dan minyak bumi, hujan asam, serta pembuangan limbah yang tidak tepat.
